Region’s First School for Social Entrepreneurs Celebrates Graduations

The dynamic achievements of 17 students from Yorkshire and Humber’s first School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) have been celebrated in a vibrant graduation ceremony.

The School, which was founded in London in 1997, promotes and encourages entrepreneurialism among people working for social benefit and includes a network of associate operations across the UK, Ireland and Australia.

Social enterprise and regeneration experts Camberwell won the franchise to host the Yorkshire and Humber School which was launched in 2009 as the region’s first dedicated education facility of its kind and operates out of Shine, a beacon for business, enterprise and the arts in Harehills.

At the graduation, the students - who have studied topics including managing risk and financial strategies - showcased the social impacts of their respective projects. Their talent and entrepreneurial flair has also been acknowledged in a series of sector awards in which five of the graduates have either won or been shortlisted for.

In a further development, a handover from Camberwell will see the SSE operate independently from the end of July, when the staff team and all strategic and day-to-day management will transfer to the new company.

Said Amalia Booker, director of the Yorkshire & Humber SSE: “We are extremely grateful to Camberwell for providing us with a home for the SSE this year and for providing the infrastructure required to create an ambitious venture like this in a very short period of time.

“As a result, the new organisation will continue to grow from strength to strength with an outstanding team, extensive networks and a powerful vision for the future.”

Said Camberwell MD Todd Hannula: “Equipping social entrepreneurs with powerful business skills and commercial acumen is vital to create lasting social good, and the students’ successes accelerate the SSE’s goal to achieve Yorkshire’s social enterprise ambitions.

“Previous graduates of the SSE programme both nationally and worldwide have gone on to make a significant difference across Yorkshire and Camberwell wishes Amalia and the team continued success as the School moves into its second year.“

Those interested in applying for a placement on the SSE’s 2011-2011 programme can contact Amalia on 0113 388 0139.
